Q. I was under the impression that this government was founded under the simple concept that the people should run it, with as little government control as possible. Our world contains so many new variables that government has, by nature, grown over time. Does the government need to be streamlined? Yes, of course. But simply comparing our system to that of colonial times to overemphasize the point is a mischaracterization. To answer your initial question: our country was founded on the belief of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. And the freedom for all (white, Christian, land-owning) men. Of course we have a slightly different approach today. The Framers of the country had a fear of government that it would dominate every aspect of private life and thus the Constitution was created.
